Our Story: From Anxiety to Nervous System Regulation

For years, I thought I was just anxious. That's what my diagnosis said. Generalized Anxiety Disorder. So I did what you do — therapy, medication, all the things that help you manage.

And they did help. But I was still waking up tense, reacting to everything, feeling like my body was always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

How I Discovered Nervous System Regulation

Then I became a foster parent. During training, they taught us about the nervous system — how trauma lives in the body, how kids need co-regulation to feel safe, how their behavior isn't the problem, it's the signal.

And I sat there thinking: wait, this is me. This is what's happening in my body.

I started learning everything I could. Polyvagal theory, somatic experiencing, why our bodies get stuck in fight-or-flight and how to actually get them out. Not just calm down in the moment, but retrain the patterns that keep us revved up.

It changed everything.


What Nervous System Healing Actually Looks Like

Not overnight. Not like flipping a switch. But slowly, my body started to remember what safe feels like. I could sleep. I could breathe without my chest feeling tight. I stopped living like everything was an emergency. It's the exact opposite of the on-demand lives we live now, but there's no fast-tracking meaningful, lasting, drug-free change in the nervous system.

Here's what I realized: we have all these tools for kids to regulate. Weighted blankets, swings, sensory toys. But adults? We get told to meditate and take bubble baths.

That's not enough. We need actual nervous system support that fits into our lives. That doesn't look like we raided the pediatric occupational therapist's office.
